Bilbao: A Work of Art
Bilbao is Spain’s sixth largest city and one of the country’s largest industrial ports. While well known for trade and manufacturing, Bilbao is also a fantastic destination for tourists. The city is home to many attractions and wonderful restaurants.
Bilbao is famous in the art world as the location to the Guggenheim Museum of Spain. The Guggenheim Museum is housed in an architectural wonder designed by the American architect Frank Gehry at a cost of over one hundred million dollars. The architect was inspired in his design by the classic German movie Metropolis; the building is meant to remind visitors of Bilbao’s manufacturing past. Locally, the museum is referred to as the Beast because of it’s out of the ordinary shape.
The Guggenheim Museum of Spain owns some of the world’s best examples of late twentieth century art. Artists represented at the museum include Picasso, Warhol, de Koonig, and Rothko among many more. An immense Mark Rothko piece, “untitled” is displayed at the museum’s entrance.
The Guggenheim collection also includes the work of modern artists working in Europe today. The museum makes an effort to support new European artist, especially Spanish artists. Many traveling exhibits also visit the museum on a continuing basis.
The Guggenheim Museum of Spain in Bilbao is one of three Guggenheim Museums in the world. The other two museums are located in Venice, Italy and New York City, New York. Exhibits rotate between the three museums giving visitors a chance to see new and exciting works of art throughout the year.
